SINGLE REVIEW: Born Ruffians / Miss You

Quick PSA: We’re piloting a new style of single review on here – any feedback would be appreciated 🙂

What have Born Ruffians been up to? – Luke, Mitch, Steve and Andy already have a massive social media following, with almost 60,000 likes on Facebook, and a respectable 15,000 followers on Twitter. ‘Miss You’ is one of the singles being released to promote their latest album, rock n roll & feel-good inspired Uncle, Dog, & The Chief, coming out later this month. A North American tour follows the album release, between March and May, with performances in the UK coming in June, in locations including London and Bristol.

Song meaning – On first listen, the track appears to be a lamenting love song directed towards a person the protagonist misses. However, there is more than meets the eye; ‘Miss You’ actually carves a more egotistical meaning. The protagonist is someone emotionally suffering, and through this, they imagine and presume that everyone who walks past them notices them, and equally cares about them. Singles which marvel a deeper meaning underneath the surface deserve extra points alone.

For fans of…MAGIC! (an awesome Canadian band who are so much more than their worldwide smash hit ‘Rude’. Like Born Ruffians, they are also Canadian and are also based in Toronto). Other related artists include Tokyo Police Club, and The Dodos.

Why you’ll soon fall in love with the track – Sometimes after we review a song we can forget anything about it until it’s the time to listen to it again, but the chorus hook of ‘Miss You’ was swirling around our heads after its first play! It carries the chilled, but vibrant feel that surf pop bands including The Beach Boys had back in the 1960s. It’s got a picturesque start, with a mellow acoustic guitar intro – you can picture yourself relaxing on a warm American beach, listening to its delightfully ambient beats in the background. The track does pick up in every however, delivering that strong, punchy, resonant chorus that we all so love on the blog.

Favourite lyric“You talk to yourself at night (to yourself at night), tell yourself, tell yourself those little white lies (self those little white lies)”.

‘Miss You’ is out everywhere now.
